mla format is basically the standarized format for writing essays, etc, etc... a lot of schools require it and you are probably going to need it in high school

In the short story “Once Upon a Time’ by Nadine Gordimer, the setting functions as the motivator for all of the actions the family does and as a way to convey how fear is apart of human nature and how it can distort. This is done through the description of the setting and the events that surround the family, “...every week there were more reports of intrusion...” (Gordimer 3). The husband and wife fear the thought of getting hurt because of how they perceive their surroundings as unsafe, so it serves to motivate them to go further with their precautions. Gordimer also makes a point of how fear is integral to human nature, “...tear off the plaque YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED and open the gates...” (Gordimer 2). The wife and husband’s fear of danger is engrained in them with human nature, and as such with their environment and beliefs, this fear warps into their motivation to take drastic measures. With this in mind, Gordimer utilizes the setting and its events as a motivator to warp the husband and the wife’s natural sense of fear.
